From crossing chromosomes to crossing curricula – a biomimetic analogy for cross-disciplinary engineering curriculum planning

چکیده
Interdisciplinary engineering programs have many perceived benefits including developing broader skills and an ability to work with complex real-life problems. However, the development of interdisciplinary faces challenges how balance breadth depth, integrate learning into existing studies across university structures. In in communicating interdisciplinarity, T-, Y- Pi-shaped visualisations are often used. We develop improved model by using biomimetic analogy from genetics aid curriculum planning. map analogies between genes chromosomes act evolution species similar mechanisms can evolving curricula. identify threegenetic include interdisciplinarity curriculum: mutations as unplanned changes, DNA inserts modular structures, crossing cross-disciplinary programs. use examples two universities detail this helps reframe

A Passage Through Science: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries HENRYSMALL
A METHODOLOGY IS PRESENTED FOR CREATING pathways through the scientific literature following strong co-citation links. A specific path is described starting in economics and ending in astrophysics traversing 331 documents. Special attention is given to where the path crosses disciplinary boundaries and how analogy can be used to model the thought processes involved in such transitions. Implicat...
متن کاملMETAHEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR MINIMUM CROSSING NUMBER PROBLEM
This paper presents the application of metaheuristic methods to the minimum crossing number problem for the first time. These algorithms including particle swarm optimization, improved ray optimization, colliding bodies optimization and enhanced colliding bodies optimization. For each method, a pseudo code is provided. The crossing number problem is NP-hard and has important applications in eng...

Supporting security-oriented, inter-disciplinary research: crossing the social, clinical and geospatial domains. How many people have had a chronic disease for longer than 5-years in Scotland? How has this impacted upon their choices of employment? Are there any geographical clusters in Scotland where a high-incidence of patients with such long-term illness can be found? How does the life expec...
